Why There Is Darkness While There Are Millions Of Brightening Stars In Universe ?

There are innumerable stars in the universe. Many are bigger and brighter than the Sun, which we see twinkling in the sky at night. Then why is the night on earth black and dark? This question has been troubling scientists for centuries. Many types of arguments were presented. It was even said that the universe has no limits. Everything present here is stable. That means there is no change in it. But till date the exact answer has not been found. The question first came to the mind of German astronomer Heinrich Wilhelm Olbers as to why the sky remains dark at night despite millions of glowing balls of fire. After this the debate started.

A scientist named Edgar Allan Poe tried to find some answers to this. He told that when we look into space through a telescope, we see emptiness everywhere. The reason for this could be that space is probably so big that sometimes no ray of light from there is able to reach us. In the 19th century, some scientists said that there are clouds of dust between the stars which absorb the light coming towards the earth. However, they too could not give a complete answer. According to astronomers, light coming from great distances also gets destroyed on the way. Sometimes light is no longer in the spectrum that can be seen with the naked eye.

Light itself is not visible.

The same question was asked to some people on the social media site Quora. The answer is quite interesting. One user wrote, the light that reflects all objects is not itself visible. The rays of light themselves are invisible. When it falls on any object or person, it becomes visible. In our solar system, the Sun is the source of light, it emits light rays, but the Moon reflects these rays. That means we cannot see light until our eyes absorb it.

There is no reflecting object present.

Similarly, there are billions of big sun-like stars in the space, but the space is dark because there is no reflecting object present in the sky between the stars and galaxies. When a passenger sitting in a spacecraft looks towards the sun, only a bright round sun is visible but there is dense darkness all around it. On Earth, we see light in the sky during the day because dust particles, water vapor, ice particles, and many other polluting substances are present in the atmosphere around the Earth. These substances reflect and refract the sun's rays due to which we see the sky illuminated during the day.
